🎯 Role Overview

As the Director of Engineering for the Data Platform team, you will:

• Own the strategic direction and roadmap for Discord’s data infrastructure, tools, and applications.
• Lead and grow a high-performing engineering organization.
• Ensure that the data platform enables data-driven decisions company-wide.
• Combine technical leadership with organizational strategy.
• Collaborate closely with Data+ML org, Product Engineering, Core Tech, and ML Platform teams.

🔑 Responsibilities

• Define and drive the strategic vision and technical roadmap of the data platform.
• Build and mentor engineering managers and teams, fostering collaboration and growth.
• Champion software engineering best practices, data architecture, and system reliability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams on technical decisions.
• Drive continuous improvement and innovation within the data platform team.

✅ Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• 6+ years in technical leadership or management roles.
• At least 3 years managing other managers.
• Proven track record leading large-scale data platform teams.
• Strong skills in distributed systems, Kafka, Spark, BigQuery, AWS/GCP/Azure.
• Understanding of data governance, privacy, and compliance.
• Excellent strategic thinking and communication skills.

• Experience as a senior leader/head of data platform at high-scale consumer tech companies.
• Familiarity with Machine Learning infrastructure.
• Experience hiring and scaling engineering teams in startups.

💰 Compensation

• Base salary: $400,000 to $450,000 (US only)
• Equity and benefits also included.
• Salary depends on skills, experience, and education.
