About the Role

Discord is deeply invested in user safety and content moderation as its platform grows. With over 200M active users, ensuring that the space remains welcoming and safe is a priority. The Director of Machine Learning, Safety will lead the charge in applying state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) technologies to tackle safety issues, ranging from proactive content detection to fraud prevention.

This position is critical for scaling Discord’s safety mechanisms and will involve leading a team of ML scientists and engineers across multiple domains such as Trust & Safety, Fraud Prevention, and Content Moderation.

What You'll Be Doing

• Drive the technical vision for Discord’s Safety ML stack using cutting-edge ML technologies.
• Lead and scale teams across Trust & Safety, Fraud Prevention, and Content Moderation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Trust & Safety, Legal, Policy) to demonstrate ML’s impact on user safety.
• Innovate data sourcing and model development to improve key safety metrics.
• Guide technical decisions around ML architecture and infrastructure choices.
• Mentor and grow the technical leaders within the Safety ML organization.

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of experience in machine learning, data science, or a related technical field.
• 5+ years leading teams that build ML products at scale.
• Proven success in Trust & Safety, Fraud Prevention, or Content Moderation.
• Strong ability to apply ML to consumer-facing problems.
• Experience collaborating with Policy, Legal, and Trust & Safety teams.
• Strong balance between technical excellence and business impact.
• Experience scaling and organizing teams across multiple functions.

Salary Range

• Base Salary: $400,000 - $450,000
• Equity + Benefits: Included (not specified)
