Role Overview:

Slack is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join our Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) team, working at the frontier of generative AI. You will help shape the next generation of intelligent agents by designing and scaling advanced RAG services, knowledge graphs, and large language model (LLM)-powered systems.

This is a high-impact role for builders who thrive at the intersection of AI innovation, scalability, and user experience, and want to see their work in the hands of millions.

What You’ll Do:

• Architect, build, and scale RAG services that support thousands of users and integrations.
• Drive performance optimization, automation, and root cause analysis for AI-driven systems.
• Collaborate across teams—PMs, architects, data scientists, and AI researchers—to develop and deploy powerful ML/AI features.
• Participate in on-call rotations and help solve mission-critical issues.
• Mentor fellow engineers, lead large-scale projects, and contribute to evolving ML best practices.
• Push the envelope of creativity: What if we communicated with color as well as words?

What We're Looking For:

Required:

• 10+ years of experience in ML engineering or building AI systems.
• Deep knowledge of NLP, LLMs, and prompt engineering.
• Expertise in Python, Scala, Java, or similar languages.
• Experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras).
• Hands-on experience with distributed systems (Kafka, Spark, Hadoop).
• Experience with MLOps tools (Airflow, Dagster, Luigi).
• Strong background in algorithms, data structures, and system design.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience).

Preferred:

• Experience with retrieval systems, vector databases, and embedding techniques.
• Background in conversational AI and Bayesian methods.
• Passion for solving previously unsolved AI problems.
• Collaborative mindset and experience across technical and business teams.

Compensation:

$172,000 – $384,100/year (based on experience and location) + equity, bonuses, and benefits.
