About the Role

As a Public Policy Advisor at Discord, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s external engagements with U.S. and Canadian policymakers. This position requires a skilled communicator with a strong understanding of legislative processes and a passion for tech policy—especially in areas like online safety, privacy, cybersecurity, and content moderation.

You'll report to the Director of U.S. and Canada Public Policy and collaborate closely with internal teams including Legal, Trust & Safety, and Communications. This is a highly strategic role that involves balancing internal advocacy with external coalition-building to protect and advance Discord’s interests and its users’ experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage Policymakers: Build trust with government officials, regulators, and other stakeholders by articulating Discord’s mission, values, and policies.
• Policy Advocacy: Represent Discord’s position on legislation and regulations, especially those impacting platform governance, user rights, and safety.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Work within public policy coalitions, trade groups, and with civil society to drive aligned outcomes.
• Monitor Policy Developments: Track and analyze legislative and regulatory trends across the U.S. and Canada.
• Content Development: Draft position papers, talking points, memos, and response letters to government consultations.
• Internal Partnerships: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure policy strategies are well-informed and integrated into company operations.
• Travel Readiness: Be available for domestic travel to attend briefings, hearings, and conferences when needed.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in government affairs, public policy advocacy, or government service.
• Deep understanding of the U.S. legislative process and regulatory frameworks.
• Demonstrated success leading multi-year advocacy campaigns or initiatives.
• Experience with tech policy topics such as:
• Online child safety
• User privacy laws (e.g. COPPA, CCPA)
• Cybersecurity standards
• Platform accountability and content moderation
• Ability to translate complex technical or legal concepts into clear narratives for policymakers.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and empathetic approach.
