The Opportunity: Director of Engineering, Data Platform

We're looking for a seasoned leader to head Discord's Data Platform function. You’ll be at the helm of building and scaling the core data infrastructure that enables decision-making and innovation across every department—from product development to machine learning to business operations.

This is a critical leadership role where you'll define the long-term data vision, guide the architecture of the platform, and lead a growing organization of high-performing engineers and managers.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Define and own the strategy for Discord’s Data Platform, collaborating across Data, ML, and Infrastructure orgs.
• Lead and grow multiple engineering teams, including engineering managers and senior/staff engineers.
• Champion best practices in data engineering, distributed systems, security, and software architecture.
• Foster a culture of innovation, mentorship, and high performance across a cross-functional team.
• Collaborate with executives, product leads, and data science partners to align platform capabilities with business priorities.
• Drive technical decisions that ensure scalability, compliance, and reliability for all of Discord’s data operations.

What You Bring

• 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 6+ years in engineering leadership.
• 3+ years of experience leading engineering managers.
• Proven track record building large-scale data platforms in production environments.
• Technical depth in distributed systems, data infrastructure (Kafka, Spark, BigQuery, etc.), and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Deep understanding of data governance, privacy, and compliance standards.
• Strategic and cross-functional thinker with strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Bonus Points

• Experience leading data teams in a consumer-scale, high-growth tech company.
• Familiarity with ML infrastructure and pipelines.
• A background in scaling teams quickly in startup or hypergrowth environments.

Compensation

• Base Salary: $400,000 – $450,000
