As a Policy Advisor on the Public Policy/Government Relations team, you will help build relationships with policymakers, regulators, and other stakeholders to ensure that Discord’s interests are represented effectively. You will work closely with the Director of U.S. and Canada Public Policy and cross-functional teams to advocate for Discord’s positions on key legislative and regulatory issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Stakeholder Engagement: Introduce Discord to government policymakers and key stakeholders, educating them on our platform, vision, products, and investments in privacy and safety.
- Advocacy: Advocate for Discord’s position on legislative and regulatory initiatives affecting our users and business. Balance direct advocacy with coalition and association efforts.
- Coalition Building: Engage with peer companies and civil society organizations on policy coalitions, ensuring Discord's voice is part of broader industry discussions.
- Policy Monitoring: Monitor policy developments in the U.S. and Canada, keeping the team informed about relevant regulatory changes.
- Public Policy Materials: Develop position papers, talking points, presentations, and responses to consultations to engage with government and regulatory bodies.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with Legal, Trust and Safety, Communications, and other internal teams to report on policy developments and gather input.
What You Should Have
- 5+ years of experience in government, public policy advocacy, or government relations.
- Deep understanding of the policymaking process in the U.S. and experience with technology policy initiatives like online safety, privacy, cybersecurity, and content moderation.
- Ability to execute a multi-year strategic advocacy program, with a track record of successful policy engagement.
- Commitment to Discord’s mission to create an online space where everyone can belong.
- Ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, compelling narratives for non-technical audiences.
- Proven success in building trust and consensus across diverse stakeholders with varying priorities and viewpoints.
- Willingness to travel within the U.S. as needed.
Compensation
- Base Salary: $137,000 to $151,000 (U.S.), plus equity and benefits.
- Salary is based on role, level, skills, experience, and education.
