Discord is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join the Media Infrastructure team. This team manages over 100PB of user-generated media, ensuring high-performance storage and delivery for millions of users. As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll work on core media systems that handle large-scale challenges related to video encoding, playback, and media storage optimization.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Solve scaling challenges in media storage and delivery.
• Ensure speed, reliability, and efficiency of systems.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to build innovative features.
• Architect and evolve Discord’s media infrastructure to scale with millions of users.
• Mentor and lead a team of engineers, defining best practices and improving workflows.
• Monitor processes using data-driven insights to measure impact.

What You Should Have:

• 7+ years of experience in backend systems.
• 10+ years in software development using languages like Rust, C++, Python.
• Extensive experience with video encoding and familiarity with video/image codecs.
• Expertise in distributed systems, GraphQL, REST, HTTP, gRPC, and API design.
• Experience with video streaming protocols and large-scale data storage systems.
• Familiarity with CDN technologies like Fastly, Cloudflare, CloudFront.

Bonus Points:

• Experience with iOS/Android media transcoding and playback.
• Expertise with tools like FFMPEG, GPAC, and similar media frameworks.
• Contributions to open-source projects
• Familiarity with cloud environments (GCP, AWS) and DevOps tools like Terraform.
