About the Role:

Discord is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer to join their Client Platform & Performance team, focusing on improving the technical experience for Discord’s users across all platforms, particularly mobile performance.

Discord has over 200 million active users every month, and gaming is a central part of its platform. The company aims to enhance its core user experience by building fast, scalable, and reliable applications that are not only functional but delightful for users.

This role will play a critical part in shaping Discord’s mobile client experience, specifically React Native optimization, to support Discord’s growth in the years to come.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead technical direction: Oversee the strategy for Discord's client platforms with a special focus on mobile performance and React Native optimization.
• Architect and develop libraries: Build foundational client-side libraries across the application stack to ensure performance and scalability.
• Engineering quality: Maintain high standards for performance, developing systems to ensure sustainable performance and quality across platforms.
• Mentorship: Guide and mentor the next generation of technical leaders within Discord.

What You Should Have:

• Experience: 10+ years as a software engineer working on large, cross-platform projects.
• Mobile expertise: Deep understanding of mobile performance, particularly with React Native, and a passion for delivering exceptional products to 200 million users.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, React Native, and experience with low-level languages (e.g., C++) for performance optimization.
• Problem-solving: Exceptional ability to diagnose and resolve complex performance issues.
• Leadership: Experience leading technical excellence, establishing best practices for performance, accessibility, and quality.
• Communication: Strong skills in technical discussions, fostering clear communications and aligning teams.

Bonus Points:

• Active involvement in React/React Native communities (e.g., open-source contributions, conference talks).
• Experience optimizing applications for international markets with varying network conditions.
• Familiarity with performance profiling and optimization tools.
• Background in game development or related technologies.

Work Environment:

• Hybrid role: You’ll be expected to work in the San Francisco office at least 1 day per week.

Compensation:

• Base salary range: $304,000 - $342,000, plus equity and benefits.
• Compensation is determined by role, level, and factors like experience and education.
