About the Role:

PhonePe is looking for a highly skilled Backend Software Engineer to design and develop scalable, high-performance systems that serve hundreds of millions of users. The ideal candidate has strong programming fundamentals, deep expertise in backend system design, and a passion for solving real-world problems at scale.

Responsibilities:

• Build robust, scalable, and maintainable web-based backend systems
• Design intuitive APIs, abstractions, and reusable components
• Develop multi-threaded, concurrent systems
• Drive architecture decisions and impact analysis
• Mentor junior engineers and guide technical execution
• Work closely with Product Managers to translate features into scalable solutions
• Optimize performance in distributed systems
• Own and deliver mid-sized projects from design to deployment
• Collaborate across teams and track project outcomes

Required Qualifications:

• 7–11 years of experience in backend development
• Expertise in Java, C, or C++
• Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, and system architecture
• Experience with MySQL and NoSQL technologies (e.g., HBase, Elasticsearch, Aerospike)
• Hands-on knowledge of multithreading, concurrency, and TDD
• Experience in full software lifecycle on Linux systems
• Degree in Computer Science (BTech, MTech, or Ph.D.) or related discipline

Preferred:

• Experience designing and owning large-scale systems
• Startup experience with high ownership
• Strong communication and documentation skills
• Familiarity with technical documentation and architectural best practices
