About the Role

As a Backend Engineer in the Institutional Foundations team, you will build critical backend systems powering Coinbase’s institutional business, supporting secure custody, asset management, staking, and more for global financial institutions. You'll work on high-frequency, low-latency systems at scale, helping transition a monolithic codebase into microservices and influencing the direction of our technical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Decompose a monolithic Rails application into scalable microservices.
• Design and implement backend services with long-term scalability and maintainability.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and leadership to define roadmaps and deliver product features.
• Write high-quality, well-tested, and performant backend code to support business and technical goals.

Requirements

• 2+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering.
• Proven ability to build, scale, and maintain production-grade services and microservice-based architectures.
• Strong understanding of testing, debugging, and code quality best practices.
• A deep interest in crypto and decentralized financial systems.

Preferred Skills

• Experience in fast-growth tech environments.
• Familiarity with blockchain ecosystems (Ethereum, Bitcoin, etc.).
• Experience with backend tools and frameworks including Golang, Ruby, Rails, Sinatra, Docker, Postgres, MongoDB, or Redshift.
• Knowledge of building secure, reliable systems for finance or crypto applications.
• Experience with crypto-forward tools: Ethereum wallets, ENS, dApps, and smart contracts.

Compensation & Benefits

💰 Salary Range: $152,405 USD – $179,300 USD

🎯 Includes: Base salary + target bonus + target equity + comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).
