🚀 Mission of the Role

Coinbase is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to help automate complex operations with cutting-edge ML/GenAI. You'll be focused on scaling critical infrastructure like document processing, risk modeling, and fraud detection — essential to the integrity and compliance of a global crypto financial platform.

🔍 Core Responsibilities

• Build multi-modal ML models to extract info from various document types (IDs, utility bills, etc.)
• Fine-tune LLMs (Large Language Models) for risk assessment and onboarding evaluation
• Design real-time pipelines for fraud detection and KYC/EDD triggers
• Develop explainable ML systems that provide transparency into automated decisions
• Collaborate with domain experts (e.g., compliance, fraud, risk) to translate heuristics into ML features
• Partner with platform teams to deploy high-availability ML services

✅ What Coinbase Is Looking For

Must-Haves

• 8+ years ML experience (or PhD + 5 years)
• Advanced degree (MS required, PhD preferred)
• Strong developer background — you build scalable, production ML systems
• Deep knowledge of transformers, LLMs, DNNs, classification
• Proven experience with production-grade ML deployments (latency, availability)
• Skilled at tradeoffs between model complexity and real-world constraints
• Comfortable collaborating cross-functionally (especially with non-technical stakeholders)

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with fraud, risk modeling, anomaly detection
• Knowledge of crypto and blockchain protocols
• Familiarity with financial regulation and compliance standards
