As a Staff Designer and leader within the organization, you will define what design quality means within Discord Design. Collaborating across teams, you’ll guide the future evolution of the product and our community's experience. You’ll have the opportunity to shape not only the visual design but also how our design systems are crafted, maintained, and scaled for millions of users worldwide.

The Design Systems team is a cross-functional unit that ensures design consistency across all facets of UI, content, and graphics. As a member of this team, you will take ownership of the design system, which will be used by product designers, engineers, and product managers to create seamless experiences. Your work will shape a coherent and distinctive look and feel for both our desktop and mobile experiences, and you'll help ensure the system is at the forefront of the latest trends in design and technology.

What You'll Be Doing:

Vision & Strategy

Define the north star for the design system, solving foundational challenges to ensure scalability and future-proofing across Discord.

Partner with the Design Systems Design Manager to create and drive the long-term vision, aligning the system with company goals and evolving needs within the DeFi platform space.

Lead cross-functional efforts, advocating for a systems-thinking approach to design and fostering alignment across teams and disciplines.

Stay informed on the latest design trends, blockchain technologies, and emerging best practices to ensure the design system remains innovative and adaptable.

Design System Leadership

Design reusable components, patterns, and tools, including design tokens, UI kits, and component libraries, to ensure consistency and efficiency across Discord’s platform.

Craft comprehensive, easy-to-understand documentation for designers and developers, ensuring that the system is applied seamlessly across all projects.

Continuously evolve the design system based on user feedback, advancements in technology, and the constantly shifting landscape of Ethereum, NFT, and smart contracts.

Migration & Integration

Lead the migration of existing products to the design system, ensuring a smooth transition and prioritizing the Designer Experience.

Update or replace legacy components to bring them in line with modern standards, including best practices in blockchain design and crypto interfaces.

Support & Advocacy

Act as a champion for the design system, educating teams on its benefits, best practices, and guiding principles through presentations, workshops, and ongoing communication.

Provide expert support and manage feedback channels, ensuring the system meets the evolving needs of both internal teams and end users.

Mentor senior designers and foster systems-thinking across the organization, ensuring everyone involved is aligned with the long-term vision.

What You Should Have:

7+ years designing consumer-facing products—especially within the gaming and web3 space.

3+ years leading design systems teams, and driving initiatives that have had organizational impact.

Experience in crafting scalable design and code libraries and developing comprehensive documentation for use in decentralized platforms, including cryptocurrency, NFTs, and DeFi tools.

Proficiency in creating, refining, and evolving design systems that integrate seamlessly across mobile and desktop applications.

Strong leadership skills with a track record of successfully managing large-scale, high-impact projects in rapidly evolving environments.

A portfolio showcasing your work as the primary designer on large projects, ideally demonstrating expertise in UI/UX, blockchain technologies, and crypto-based interfaces.

Expertise in visual design and brand integration across various consumer touchpoints.

Bonus Points:

Experience with version control tools like GitHub and technical writing in markdown.

Expertise in Figma tooling and creating efficient workflows for design teams.

An understanding of the web3 space, including hands-on experience with blockchain development, cryptocurrency, and smart contracts.

A deep passion for gaming and familiarity with NFTs, Ethereum, and the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.

Salary & Benefits

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $205,000 to $225,000 + equity + benefits. Please note that this reflects the base salary only and does not include equity or other benefits.
