Title: Staff Software Engineer, Backend – Onchain DevX

Location: Remote (U.S.)

Type: Full-time

Compensation: $218,025 – $256,500 USD/year

Includes: base salary + bonus + equity + benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k))

Team: Developer Experience (DevX) → Onchain Pod

🔧 What You’ll Do

This role focuses on building world-class infrastructure and tools for onchain developers, both inside and outside Coinbase. You’ll lead efforts to make Web3 development as accessible, reliable, and fast as modern Web2.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and help define the charter for the Onchain Pod in DevX.
• Build and maintain internal tooling for smart contract workflows (especially EVM-based).
• Identify and eliminate bottlenecks in the onchain development lifecycle.
• Architect backend systems to enable secure and productive blockchain development.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Security, and Product to deliver best-in-class DX tools.
• Stay on top of emerging trends and integrate top-tier open source or commercial tools.
• Write clean, scalable, well-documented code with performance and security in mind.
• Mentor engineers and foster a culture of engineering excellence.

🧠 What They’re Looking For

Required Experience:

• 8+ years in backend software engineering.
• Deep familiarity with onchain development, particularly EVM ecosystems.
• Experience with smart contract lifecycle (deployment, execution, management).
• Working knowledge of L1s/L2s and how they differ (e.g., Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum).
• Strong communicator – technical and cross-functional.
• Familiar with cloud infra (AWS), containerization (Kubernetes), IaC tools (Terraform).
• Degree in CS or equivalent practical experience.

Bonus / Nice to Haves:

• Experience in DevX, Productivity Engineering, or Platform Engineering teams.
• Contributions to open-source crypto/Web3 projects (e.g., OP Stack, Geth).
• Knowledge of Golang, Rust, Solidity, Foundry, Reth, Geth.
• Security-first mindset: familiarity with red teaming, exploit detection, etc.
• Previous work in high-growth tech companies or startup environments.
