About the Role:

Discord is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Notifications Platform team to build a unified system that delivers tens of billions of notifications daily across multiple channels, including mobile push, SMS, email, and in-app messages. This engineer will be responsible for designing and developing the platform from scratch, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and data-driven improvements.

Responsibilities:

• Develop a platform that consolidates various notification delivery methods.
• Define technical and functional requirements for the system.
• Implement a robust data collection pipeline for tracking and optimizing notifications.
• Scale the platform to handle hundreds of millions of users efficiently.
• Collaborate with other engineering teams to troubleshoot and enhance system performance.
• Mentor and support junior engineers.

Requirements:

• 7+ years of experience in building high-performance distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of observability, monitoring, and system performance.
• Ability to work in undefined environments and devise creative solutions.
• Experience in reading and writing code in large codebases.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug regressions.
• Willingness to work across various technologies and domains.
• Data-driven approach to decision-making.

Bonus Skills:

• Proficiency in Python, Elixir, or Rust.
• Experience deploying scalable services on Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with GCP Pub/Sub or other message brokers.
• Experience working with NoSQL databases (Cassandra, Scylla, etc.).
• Contributions to open-source projects.
