About the Role

Canva is building the future of design with powerful AI. As a Fundamental Research Scientist, you will work on advanced AI research to improve generative models in areas like images, video, and 3D. You’ll experiment with cutting-edge techniques and help turn research into real features used by millions of Canva users.

This role is open to all experience levels — including experienced professionals, upcoming graduates (2025/2026), and interns.

Key Responsibilities

• Research Direction: Lead and define research plans focused on the latest multimodal AI developments.
• Experimentation: Design and run experiments using high-end GPUs to test ideas.
• Data & Analysis: Analyze results to improve model performance and quality.
• Model Development: Create and train new generative model architectures (e.g., diffusion, autoregressive), reinforcement learning techniques, and synthetic data pipelines.

You’re a Strong Candidate If You Have

• Experience building and training large-scale text-to-image, video, or 3D generation models (e.g., diffusion or autoregressive models).
• A strong academic or research background with publications in top conferences like CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
• Hands-on experience with large-scale distributed training across hundreds of GPUs.
• Expertise in Python, PyTorch, Diffusers, Transformers, Megatron, DeepSpeed, and cloud computing platforms.
• Ability to share knowledge internally and externally through documentation, collaboration, papers, or talks.
• Passion and curiosity for AI trends and emerging technologies.
