About the Role:
GitHub is seeking an experienced employment attorney to join its Corporate External & Legal Affairs leadership team. This role will focus on providing legal guidance on employment matters, ensuring compliance with global labor laws, managing internal investigations, and working closely with HR and business leaders. The ideal candidate will have expertise in employment law, litigation, and corporate compliance.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary legal advisor for HR and business leadership on employment law issues.
- Collaborate across teams to develop and implement HR policies and compliance strategies.
- Advise on employment handbooks, policies, and global labor law frameworks.
- Support internal investigations and dispute resolution on employment-related matters.
- Work with outside counsel to manage international employment law issues.
- Provide training for HR teams and managers on employment law best practices.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with new employment laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Oversee legal risk management, helping business leaders anticipate and mitigate potential risks.
- Manage employment-related litigation and dispute resolution, including administrative charges and claims.
Requirements:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree or international equivalent.
- 8+ years of experience as a practicing employment attorney.
- Active law license in a relevant jurisdiction.
- Experience advising on employment and labor law matters, including discrimination, wage & hour laws, ADA/FMLA, non-compete agreements, and contract disputes.
- Experience litigating employment law cases in state and federal courts.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Law firm or in-house counsel experience with a focus on employment law.
- Knowledge of European employment law.
- Experience in technology law, AI-driven HR tools, or advising technology companies.
- Familiarity with GitHub’s platform and developer ecosystem.
- Experience managing parent-subsidiary employment relationships.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Base salary: $113,800 - $302,000 per year (varies by location and experience).
- Eligible for bonuses, stock options, and additional benefits.
