About the Role: As an Engineering Manager on Discord’s Realtime Infrastructure team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining some of Discord’s highest scale and most critical services. These systems are foundational to our text chat infrastructure and essential to dispatching updates to millions of user sessions. You will play a key role in ensuring Discord’s performance and reliability, all while collaborating with product teams to build new features and maintain the backbone of our platform.

Our Realtime Infrastructure team is small but impactful. This role reports directly to the Senior Engineering Manager of Realtime Infrastructure, and your work will directly influence Discord's success, its ability to scale, and its overall user experience. You will be tackling complex technical challenges, such as dispatching over 30 million messages per second and building scalable infrastructure for growing communities, such as Midjourney.

What You'll Be Doing:

• Build and operate large-scale, reliable, and performant distributed systems that power Discord’s core services.
• Collaborate with product teams to create and enhance features for Discord’s millions of users.
• Maintain critical tier 0 services ensuring Discord "just works" for users globally.
• Balance writing code with managing infrastructure to support the platform's continued growth.
• Work with a talented and experienced team to evolve one of the largest communication platforms in the world.

What We're Looking For:

• 5+ years of experience in backend systems design and development.
• Expertise in solving complex distributed systems problems.
• Experience in operating and maintaining critical tier 0 services in a production environment.
• Proficiency with monitoring and alerting best practices to ensure system reliability.
• Open-source familiarity: Comfortable digging into the source code of libraries and contributing to open-source projects.
• Previous experience leading complex projects with both junior and senior engineers.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and high availability.

Bonus Points:

• Experience with Elixir (our primary tech stack).
• Experience working with cloud environments (GCP, AWS, etc.).
• Familiarity with devops tools like Salt, Terraform, or Kubernetes.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
• Being a Discord power user with experience building bots or applications interacting with our platform.

Salary & Benefits:

• US Base Salary Range: $183,000 - $201,500 (varies by experience and location).
• Equity and benefits are also included.
