About the Role

Canva is expanding its AI research team and is hiring a Lead Research Scientist to drive innovation in AI-generated video and audio. You will lead a team working on models that turn text and images into high-quality videos, helping to build next-generation creative tools for Canva’s global user base.

This is a hands-on leadership role focused on research, team building, and integrating advanced AI models into Canva's platform.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead and mentor a team of research scientists working on video generation.
• Set strategic research directions that support Canva’s AI and product goals.
• Guide development of models using diffusion transformers, GANs, and autoregressive architectures.
• Work closely with engineering and product teams to bring research into production.
• Represent Canva in the AI research community through publishing, conferences, and open-source contributions.

You Might Be a Good Fit If You:

• Have led research teams in video/audio generation or similar AI fields.
• Have deep knowledge of machine learning for video/audio (e.g. GANs, diffusion models).
• Can translate advanced research into real, scalable products.
• Are strategic in research planning and align work with business goals.
• Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Stay current on AI trends and are excited to apply them in real-world use cases.
