Compensation: $240,800 – $340,200/year

Overview:

Upwork is hiring a strategic Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) to lead and scale its global accounting operations. This executive role is ideal for an experienced finance leader with a strong background in public company compliance, operational excellence, and team development. You will drive accounting strategy, ensure GAAP and SEC compliance, and support Upwork’s growth and financial transformation.

Responsibilities:

• Lead global accounting operations including financial reporting, technical accounting, SOX compliance, tax, payroll, AP, procurement, and possibly treasury and financial systems
• Ensure timely and accurate U.S. GAAP and SEC-compliant financial reporting
• Design scalable systems, processes, and controls for business growth
• Partner with the CFO and executive team on strategy, capital markets, and long-term planning
• Manage external audit and tax compliance activities
• Build strategic sourcing and procurement programs
• Drive automation and process improvements for accounting efficiency
• Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing and inclusive accounting team

Qualifications:

• Proven leadership of a global accounting function at a public company, preferably in tech or marketplace environments
• Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting, SOX compliance, and financial systems transformation
• Strong executive presence and ability to lead cross-functional initiatives
• CPA certification required
• Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and operational skills
• Demonstrated passion for inclusion, team development, and operational excellence
