Overview:

Upwork is hiring a strategic, results-driven Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) to lead its global accounting operations. As a key member of the Finance leadership team, this role oversees financial reporting, SOX compliance, tax, payroll, accounts payable, and procurement. The CAO will ensure accounting excellence aligned with U.S. GAAP and SEC requirements while driving transformation, automation, and scalable growth in a high-growth, public tech environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead all global accounting functions including reporting, technical accounting, compliance, and sourcing
• Deliver timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP
• Partner with CFO on strategic initiatives and long-range planning
• Oversee external audits, tax compliance, and maintain strong relationships with auditors and regulators
• Build and scale systems, processes, and internal controls to support global growth
• Drive automation and continuous process improvement
• Hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team

Required Qualifications:

• CPA certification and deep U.S. GAAP/SEC/SOX expertise
• Experience leading accounting for a public company (tech/platform environment preferred)
• Proven leadership in transforming accounting systems at scale
• Strong executive presence with ability to influence senior stakeholders
• Demonstrated success managing global teams and operational disciplines
• Strong communication skills and business acumen
